Bo01 is the largest European housing exhibition ever. The theme of the exhibition is man's sensory and emotional needs in the physical environment. A completely new area of about 650 homes has been constructed in Västra Hamnen, Malmö.Bo01 commands a panoramic view of the sea with Denmark on the horizon. The close proximity to the sea is attractive and is further enhanced by the open sky and the westerly winds. The space between the new development and the water edge is designed to establish an attractive area for the use of local residents, but also provides a public area outside the development for visitors. The Promenade is a boardwalk established over the stone boulders along the waterfront. Wooden stairs connect the boardwalk to the promenade's pavement. A large main square links the development to the remaining exhibition area. It is made of cobblestones with a random pattern of wood and glass insets. The goal is for the pedestrian traffic to be as unobtrusive as possible. Passing through the inner squares, people will be guided by trees and changes of surface elevations.
Rainwater from the buildings will be led into canals running along the streets. Throughout the project water is emphasized as an essential element, that encourages people to relax or play.
