Gamletull in Halmstad is a planning project of a new urban quarter with housing and office space.
On a beautiful site next to the river Nissan, the city of Halmstad is extending onto previous industrial land. The old town center forms a half-circle on the opposite side of the river, and the new area naturally expands the town by fitting into the other half-circle.
The project opens up towards the river, creating generous open green spaces between the 5-7 story buildings that contain housing and office-space. The park spaces offer grass, fruit trees, benches, and play areas in order to encourage outdoor life and activity.
The proposal continues the existing town structure to the south of the area, and uses allées of maple trees to frame the views towards the river.
A diagonal allé of cut linden trees forms an important axis across the area and points towards the old town center and a new library.
The buildings also form part of the green structure with planted terraces of different shapes and sizes, sometimes several floors high, bringing a variety of trees and shrubs into and onto the structures.
