Kastellet, Copenhagen's citadel, was built after the Swedish raid on Copenhagen in 1659 and first put to use in 1666. When the free port was constructed in 1892 and the coastal railroad in 1897, the integrity of the Citadel's plan was disturbed.
Following the closing down of the railroad in 1985, it became possible to re-establish important parts of the Citadel´s earthwork: The Sjælland Ravelin, The Ramparts, the new Ravelin Bridge access, and reconstruction of the Gefion Bridge.
