City park Lübeck, Germany
Landscape architect:
Jeppe Aagaard Andersen
Competition:
2002

In the city of Hansestadt Lübeck a new college area has been proposed. The new park is intended to be the public center of the surrounding area. Located in the college area, the park links the educational institutions with the nearby medical clinics.

The main objective of the proposal is to combine and differentiate the many functions of the city, transforming it into a successful green park with an emphasis on biological diversity and ecology; and at the same time to create a distinct city center, where the park and the city can be understood as two parts working together to make a whole.
The park is formed by one simple geometrical idea. Long lines of non- parallel rows of trees divide, close, and open the visual rooms they create.

The rows of trees are used as backdrops to highlight the landscape and to create dramatic changes of light and shade. The project is a balance between its functions and its pure form, where the garden architecture becomes art.
