The concept of this project is to create a park of diversity with increased public accessibility. By reusing large parts of the existing park structure, the possibility arises to open up areas of the Botanical Garden to the public, integrating Kaisaniemi Park with the surrounding town plan.
In relation to the structure of Helsinki, built urban corridors transform into green promenades, extending from Kaisaniemenlahti through the park and urban fabric to Esplanadi. The intention is to make the park easily accessible by connecting it to the north-south axes of the urban scheme.
The design of the park could also be considered as continuing the built blocks of the city. Each block has its own identity and attributes of discovery. Blocks are made with rows of designated trees that form the building outlines or with precisely defined flowerbeds in full bloom from spring to autumn, with species of every color.
Cut tills are used to maintain and reinforce the park´s main framework. Planted as grown trees and maintained as hedges in relation to the promenades, they define the positioning of paths. They also create a spatial structure while the existing vegetation continues to grow in a process of renewal.
